The picturesque city of Galway, Ireland, played host to a dynamic and insightful hands-on training course as part of the DECODE project from October 31st to November 2nd, 2023. All the ESRs were brought together by this event to explore the latest advancements in drug-eluting technologies and peripheral devices.
The inaugural day kicked off with an immersive half-day Anatomy Training session at the esteemed Cadaver Lab, University of Galway. The students had a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience, enhancing their understanding of medical anatomy. Following this, the agenda delved into an overview of BSC and its products, shedding light on PI Drug-eluting Technology, the distinctions between PTx and Olimus, and crucial warnings associated with PTx. The day concluded with a comprehensive exploration of Drug-Coated Balloons, covering commercially available options, upcoming innovations, and ongoing clinical studies. Additionally, ESRs explored the application of Drug-Coated Balloons in diverse peripheral anatomy scenarios, including AV Fistula and ED.
The second day focused on the manufacturing intricacies that underpin cutting-edge medical technologies. ESRs gained insights into Product Manufacturing Controls and Monitoring, along with standards, testing, calibration, and qualifications of manufacturing processes. Engaging manufacturing line tours provided a firsthand look at the production of Balloon Catheters, Stents, and Drug Eluting Stents. The agenda expanded to explore other peripheral devices, offering overviews and line tours, giving participants a holistic understanding of the manufacturing landscape in the medical industry.
The final day of the training course explored the critical aspects of regulatory pathways and submissions. The students gained a comprehensive understanding of the intricate processes involved in navigating the regulatory landscape. The agenda continued with a focus on innovation and intellectual property within the industry, highlighting the crucial role of cutting-edge ideas and protecting intellectual capital.
The culmination of the event included student presentations and round table discussions, providing a platform for participants to share insights, challenges, and current technologies across both academia and industry.
